Earring Jewelry Education
Often a staple in most women’s jewelry collection, earrings come in many shapes, sizes and styles. They are perhaps the most versatile item of jewelry because of the wide array available. When shopping for earrings, or if looking to sell your own, it is important to understand which style variant you are working with.
The Types of Earrings
From earrings that dangle down, to short posts, to ones that look as though they climb up your ear, there are many styles of earrings available. Maybe you prefer to stick to one style, or like to change it up. Either way, you’ll want to understand exactly what you are looking for when searching for a new pair to call your own. The most common styles are:
Climbers: Climbers have become extremely popular over the last few years. These earrings are unique because they appear to “climb” up the side of the ear from the lobe toward the top. Climbers are very elegant with just the right amount of edginess to them. To make it appear that the earring is climbing upwards, a wire holds it to the back of the ear, which allows it to curve toward the top.
Dangles: Dangle earrings are appropriately named because they connect to the earlobe and dangle down freely. Dangles are a popular style that has been around for several years. Often elegant, they can be worn in formal settings, but occasionally more fun and playful, some dangle earrings can be worn casually.
Hoops: Hoop earrings are a classic wardrobe staple that has remained relatively popular over the years. The hoop earring’s name comes from the circular shape that starts at the front of the earlobe and connects all the way around to the back. Metal hoops are often unadorned, but many styles also have gems and a variety of colors.
Huggies: Huggie earrings are a type of hoop but much smaller. They wrap from the front of the earlobe to the back, hugging the lobe. These earrings are great for those who are more active, because they are difficult to snag on items.
Studs: Possibly the most popular type of earring, studs are a classic piece of jewelry that can be worn for everyday wear or special occasions. Studs are typically small and often feature a single gemstone. However, there are several types of studs available, from ones that have several gems, to ones that have none at all. Stud earrings are versatile and easy to wear.
