Vintage Jewelry Education
When looking for you or your loved one’s next piece of jewelry, the terms “antique,” “estate” and “vintage” are often interchanged and it is easy to get confused. Your local jewelry expert can help you find and select the item that you are looking for, but it is important to understand what makes a piece vintage.
What is vintage jewelry?
Vintage jewelry is at least 20 to 30 years old. This could encompass any item made during the 1990s or earlier. Because this term applies to an era when jewelry was mass-produced, you might see items labeled as “vintage” far more than you see the “estate” or “antique” label.
Although jewelry from the 1800s could technically be considered vintage, a jeweler will often label an item this old as an antique, to highlight its age. Your mother’s necklace from the 1940s however, could be labeled as vintage jewelry.
